Guest users (no account)
If you use GoldStar without creating an account, nothing is stored by GoldStar. When you click “Generate Note,” the information you entered in the form is sent to the Anthropic Claude API to generate your note and then discarded. It is never written to disk or logged on our servers.
Registered users
If you create a GoldStar account, we store the following in Supabase (hosted securely on AWS):
- Your email address and account credentials
- Your student roster — first names and grade levels only
- Your note history — the generated notes associated with each student
We never store student last names, birthdates, ID numbers, or any other personally identifiable information beyond first name. Your data is only accessible to you and is never sold, shared, or used for advertising.
What is sent to Anthropic
All users — guest and registered — send the following to Anthropic's API when generating a note:
- Student's first name
- Grade level and reporting period
- Selected academic skills and performance levels
- Selected social-emotional observations
- Any text you typed in Strengths, Areas to Grow, or Additional Notes
Anthropic's data handling is governed by their privacy policy. We recommend not entering student last names or any other personally identifiable information beyond first name.
Cookies and tracking
GoldStar uses no tracking pixels and no third-party analytics. We do not use Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, or any similar service. For registered users, Supabase sets a session cookie to keep you signed in — this cookie is strictly necessary for authentication and contains no advertising data.
Your browser's localStorageis used to count how many notes you've generated today. This counter resets daily and never leaves your device.
FERPA guidance
GoldStar is designed to minimise student data exposure. To stay within FERPA best practices when using this tool:
- Use student first names only — never include last names
- Do not include student ID numbers, birth dates, or addresses
- Do not include specific test scores, IEP details, or medical information
- Do not include information that would identify a student to a third party
